WANT A GREAT PRESCRIPTION FOR BETTER HEALTH? PICK UP A PEN!

Last month in our teleseminar we discussed several ways writing can improve your health. These methods are both surprisingly simple and powerful. Here's a quick review if you missed the session.

LOG YOUR FEELINGS AND YOUR FOOD

A number of studies have been done proving that the use of a written food log speeds up weight loss. Even if you make no other dietary changes other than recording what you eat, you are likely to lose 30% more weight by (accurately and honestly) writing down what you eat.

Generally this type of log requires the name of the food and the amount. But, if you add your feelings to this log, you will learn even more about yourself.

Let's say for example, that you tend to eat when you are not just hungry, but also when you are angry, lonely or tired. Try adding these elements to your food log and see what happens.

HEALING LISTS

A list is a simple and useful tool for many things other than grocery shopping! If for example, you have experienced a loss and are struggling in your process of grief and mourning, try this gentle approach.

Clearly imagine your loved one and title a list "I Wish I Could Tell You." Become quiet and write a list of all the recent important things you have experienced and would have liked to share with the person (or pet) you have lost. Sit quietly with your list and remember.

THERAPEUTIC LETTERS

In addition to lists, letters can also have tremendous therapeutic value. Try writing a letter to a food craving, to your disease or illness or to someone who has harmed or hurt you.

Remember, this is not a letter to be sent! Use it, however, as a tool for release and healing.

EXPRESS YOURSELF!

Researcher James Pennebaker was one of the first to prove the scientific benefits of expressive writing. He experimented with college students to discover that the use of confessional style writing enhanced the immune system. Those students who wrote about a traumatic event they had never before disclosed visited the campus health center significantly less than those students who wrote about trivial events.

Don't just take his word for it. Pick up your journal and a pen and write yourself to better health!
