In the chapter called Free Form Writing in my book Writing from the Inside Out,
you can learn how to use this no-rules approach to journaling to express your deepest self.

In the chapter called The Tao of Writing in my book When Your Heart Speaks, there are two Write Now! exercises on using writing as a tool for awareness and healing.

If your writing or creative process is feeling stuck, try a Write Now! exercise. Here's one called "Let's Pretend" from my second book, When Your Heart Speaks, Take Good Notes. To order a signed copy, click here.

This exercise is about breaking through your own resistance, all the voices in your head, in your life, in your past who told you “No,” and then convinced you that you couldn’t do what you dreamed about doing. It is about discovering what really lights you up, what really turns you on. It is about listening to yourself.

  1. For fun, try doing this exercise with colored pencils, pens, or even crayons, if you prefer.

  2. Put on some favorite music, if you like.

  3. Now close your eyes and imagine, if you had no restrictions whatsoever, what you would like to be doing? Use as much detail as you can.

  4. Now take your pencil, pen or crayon and write down what you just visualized.

  5. Another way to get in touch with what lights you up is to imagine what would happen if you won the lottery. Imagine if you suddenly had all the resources you could possibly want. No limitations. What would you do if you could afford to do anything you wanted? Another way to ask the question is, if money were no object, what would you do with your time?

  6. Take your pencil, pen or crayon again and add any new ideas you came up with.
